People Incorporated is one of the Twin Cities' leading nonprofits dedicated to finding innovative and meaningful ways to address the complex and neglected needs of those who struggle with mental illness and other brain disorders.

People Incorporated is a nonprofit organization that serves people with mental illness in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul metro area. Founded in 1969, we now operate 41 programs in Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, Washington, and Dakota counties, with an annual budget of approximately $23 million. In the past year we served over 6,400 clients.

A History of People Incorporated

People Incorporated began in the early 1960s when a St. Paul minister, Rev. Harry Maghakian, noticed that a residence next to his church was sheltering a number of otherwise homeless men.

Many were veterans from World War II and Korea, and it was clear that many were masking symptoms of a mental illness with alcohol or drugs. Maghakian’s congregation began to offer these men a place in their church to come for coffee and snacks, and soon this grew to Thanksgiving and holiday meals and other special occasions.

Although the need for mental health services was clear, there were few organizations in the Twin Cities who were willing or able to provide help. Maghakian’s church soon joined with five other congregations to found an organization that eventually became known as People Incorporated. Now serving over 6,300 clients per year through 41 programs at 42 sites across five metropolitan counties, People Incorporated is well-recognized for its leadership and innovation in the provision of services for persons with mental illness.

People Incorporated is governed by a 14-member Board of Directors, and managed by an administrative staff that includes an Chief Executive Officer, three Directors of Operations, a Director of Resource Development, a Program Development Director and administrative staff support. People Incorporated employs approximately 202 full-time and 200 part-time employees. Its annual budget is $18 million, 92% of which is funded by state and county agencies.
