![]() Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare meets the special health-care needs of people — primarily children and teens — who have disabilities. Our mission is to help those we serve realize greater well-being, independence and enjoyment in life. We combine medical, nursing, therapeutic, technical, psychosocial and other expertise in family-centered programs. We provide services at our clinics, in our hospital and throughout the region, in response to community needs and often in collaboration with other organizations. We seek to build community partnerships that help continue our mission and enhance care for people who have disabilities.
![]() Treating people who have disabilities and complex medical conditions requires a team of experts. At Gillette, our doctors, surgeons, nurses, therapists, orthotists, psychologists, social workers and other specialists work together to care for patients. Throughout our centers for excellence, we offer leading-edge medical treatments tailored to the unique needs of each patient.
![]() At Gillette Children's Speciality Healthcare, we value the core philosophies of nursing and believe in providing opportunities for professional growth. In fact, we're pursuing formal status as a "magnet hospital" - one that attracts and retains nurses whose positions give them a high degree of professional and personal satisfaction - from the American Academy of Nursing. A Satisfying Career Whether you come to Gillette straight out of school or from another employer, we think you'll appreciate what we have to offer. Our nurses say they joined the profession because they wanted meaningful work caring for others. "Anyone can learn to run a machine or administer a shot," says Cathy Johnson, R.N., a clinical educator. "Doing that with caring attention, however, is what nursing was meant to be." Because our patients often have disabilities that require consistent follow-up care over the years, Gillette nurses get to know patients and their families. Within that relationship lies the opportunity to make a difference to patients - by recognizing subtle physical or emotional signs, easing pain, applying specialized medical knowledge, and communicating complex information in an easy-to-understand way. ![]() Professional Development At Gillette, we identified four keys to building an environment of growth and fulfillment for nurses:
To provide peer support, we sponsor informal discussion groups that let nurses reflect and share experiences in small groups. Off-site retreats enable nurses from various departments to meet one another, rejuvenate their enthusiasm and share the intangible benefits of their jobs. "These sessions not only advance my professional knowledge, but also provide opportunities to grow personally," says Stephanie Lurken, R.N., a change nurse. "They're also great ways of receiving support from peers, especially after challenging or emotionally taxing situations."
To offer opportunities for professional development, our registered nurses designed a program that recognizes exemplary nursing practices in patient care, leadership, professionalism, research and education.
